Handset Sales Projections Lowered -- Again
BY KRISTY BASSUENER
SEPTEMBER 6, 2001

Merrill Lynch & Co. now predicts that mobile phone sales will decline this year as
compared with last year. The firm on Wednesday projected that about 390
million handsets will sell in 2001 -- a 5 percent drop from the 410 million phones
sold in 2000. If the projection holds true, this year will be the first year ever that
year-over-year mobile handset sales have declined. Next year's sales will stay
flat, Merrill Lynch added.

Previous predictions dropped from the 500 million range to the 400 million
range, although analysts have continually revised expectations this year as
economic conditions worsened.
