If it's any consolation, Intel and MSFT can't win either. Nobody can win in the stock market, except talented short-term traders, until the economy turns around. That may be years off. The internet isn't going away. But it isn't going to make anybody much money for a while.

The next really interesting business story to watch, which will also take years to play out, is whether Microsoft can make itself into a major media company. Their plan is to grab a lock on the content-delivery infrastructure (i.e., the "Rights Management" encryption or whatever euphemism they use for copy protection), inserting themselves into the money flow so they get a little piece of every internet media-on-demand transaction, and then slowly screwing their content partners by making Microsoft content work jes' a little bit better on M$FT's infrastructure than their partners' competing content. It worked out on the desktop, and all it cost them was an annoying trial. They are proving you can not only get away with crime, but can gather yourself a group of slavish admirers in the process.

This time, however, they're going up against some other experienced hi-power corporate gangstas (AOL-TW & Viacom) rather than just self-impressed Silicon Valley zoids and garage-shop script kiddies. This will be a historic battle.
