An unfortunate choice of spectrum hampered by unresolved async CDMA issues makes multi-band multi-mode necessary if UMTS is to survive.

Qualcomm has already made the announcement to support GSM next year.

"GPRS and WCDMA infra are compatible."
Infra compatibility was never in doubt.

Methinks you are disappointed because seven hundred thousand paying subscribers already have a working 3G standard available in more than 20 phone designs that transfers significantly more data than UMTS in a fraction of its channel width and co-existing in existing spectrum licenses and coverage. Then there are features like better battery life, more built-in multimedia chipset features, less handset heat generation, meets SAR standards, and has excellent compatibility to existing IS95 equipment and phone components.

We don't call those results "spin" over here.
