<If we have laws in this country that prohibit slave labor, child labor, sweatshops, water pollution and air pollution, why should our manufacturers be penalized by allowing uninhibited importation from those who do those things? Why should our companies have to compete with companies whose governments subsidize their goods>

CB, we agree! That's great. But it would be a cynical and dangerous move to now decide to stop imports for these reasons because they would not be the real reasons. The real reason would be to transfer wealth from some locals to others. People who want to eat NZ sheep meat should be allowed to. The only reason for the restrictions by Clinton were to [illegally - which didn't seem to worry the USA or its lawyers] ensure USA sheep farmers could increase their incomes at the expense of USA sheep eaters.

Steel restrictions won't help any children in Ethiopia. Timber tariffs won't protect Canadians against sweatshops, slave labour, air pollution etc.

But I do agree with you that immoral countries should be penalized. I'm in favour of tariffs rather than local income taxes. If Europe wants CO2 reduced, they should put tariffs on the polluting USA goods so local goods will still be competitive. Not that I agree that CO2 should be reduced you understand.

Subsidies are different and are a problem for the country subsidizing, not the importing country or its consumers. Subsidies should be ignored.

What a pleasure it is to agree!
