I also found that riding with a helmet decreases my field of view and my hearing. I think this adds to the numbers more than anything. I actually felt in more danger with the helmet when measured in term of likelihood of having an accident as opposed to likelihood of being hurt if having one. Kind of like driving a small and fast sports car. It it easier to dart out of danger and avoid trouble, but deadlier on the the times an accident does in fact occur. Just like you said almost, Speeding (overtrading) as a result of an impression of low risk (tight stops)
