Scientists Seek World's[Global's] Funniest Joke

Project Aims to Explain Laughter

LONDON (Sept. 6) - British scientists have embarked
on a quest to find the world's funniest joke.

A team headed by psychologist Richard Wiseman
will spend months analyzing thousands of jokes
sent to a Web site, before testing the most humorous
contribution on a human guinea pig wired to a brain scan.

... aims to explain why laughter is beneficial.

to his Web site, called the Laughter Lab.

Their contributions would then be analyzed by researchers
looking at the age, sex and home town of the joke teller,
to determine whether humor varies according to those factors.

Visitors to the site would also be invited to judge
other contributions, helping researchers...

In the Monty Python sketch, a comedian unwittingly writes
a joke so funny he dies laughing...

... a volunteer will be told the joke as scientists
monitor reactions in the frontal lobe of the brain.

The funniest joke will be disclosed in September 2002.
