U.S. Probe of Bank Credit Lyonnais Swells to Assault on French System

By Glenn R. Simpson
Staff Reporter of The Wall Street Journal

WASHINGTON
-- A long-running probe of French banking giant Credit Lyonnais SA by U.S. prosecutors in California has swelled toward a legal assault on France's banking and regulatory systems.

In addition to alleging that the bank hid its role in what prosecutors call an illegal junk-bond transaction in 1991, they now allege that numerous bank executives engaged in a cover-up that lasted until 1999.
