RESEARCH ALERT-Lehman cuts semiconductor equipment EPS view

NEW YORK, Sept 7 (Reuters) - Lehman Brothers on Friday said it cut its earnings outlook for semiconductor equipment companies, citing continuing softness in the electronics industry and an increased likelihood of a delayed pickup in semiconductor capital spending.

Analyst Edward White reduced his earnings estimate for Novellus Systems Inc. (NasdaqNM:NVLS - news) to $1.27 from $1.41 for fiscal 2001, and to 40 cents from $1.55 for fiscal 2002. Novellus closed Thursday at $39.17 a share.

White also slashed his fiscal 2002 estimate for Applied Materials Inc. (NasdaqNM:AMAT - news) to 50 cents from $1.75 a share. Applied Materials closed Thursday at $40.20 a share.

``Our earnings estimates for most of the companies we cover had presumed a seasonal pickup in business in the fourth quarter of 2001, followed by a meaningful recovery beginning in early 2002,'' White said in a research note. ``We now believe that this is highly unlikely to occur.''

White said there is growing evidence that several chip companies are reassessing their 2002 capital projects, one of the most dramatic being Intel Corp.'s (NasdaqNM:INTC - news) decision to delay the ramp-up of a new plant in Israel.
