I am still confused a little. As I said, I do see competition between some groups but not between a scientific explanation, as you have framed it, and religion.

I can see how a group with an agenda can use science as a base for argueing against a religious explanation of something. That is easy to do. Science has organized universally observable facts and explains a particular phenomenon (ie gravity)...The phenomenon of self awareness/evidence does not have the privy to the same type science of universally observable hard data (according to some).

The social sciences, self evidence, scripture, and hard science are all complimentary explanations of the world and in many ways confirm one another. While, any attempt to use one to disprove the existence of the other is futile.
