I saw Voice of Fire in Ottawa. I was there to see the Renior exhibit a few years ago, and began wondering around for a quiet corner to munch a chocolate bar. I entered a large empty room where this edifice to either foolishness or indefatigable tax collecting was hung. Sure, it looked impressive, isolated in a huge empty room with white walls. But my clothesline the day after visiting the beach would've added some colour to the room just as well, and would've cost less. (I would've been glad to donate it for $180,000 or 10% of what was paid for the paint and plywood.)

My reaction to seeing it in the gallery was probably stronger because I had just finished viewing a few dozen Renior portraits. There's nothing like putting trash and treasure in juxtaposition to sharpen one's focus on the differences.

Bye4Now, FD.
