Sam, the HFC infrastructure is used only for each 1000-home branch. I can't imagine a system smaller than 1000 homes. There is a "home run" from each node to the operator's central site.

Cox in San Diego is a good example of a "patchwork system" - Cox has coverage all over the San Diego area, with other providers hopscotching all over the place. All of the Cox @Home nodes access the Internet through a single connection point.

My domain name shows you how this is laid-out. cxxxxx-b.dt1.sdca.home.com.

"dt1" stands for the "downtown 1" node. "sdca" stands for "San Diego, CA". dt1 presumably serves a cable segment that passes 1000 homes.
