There is little reason to have differential tax rates. Under a single rate, say 20%, the rich would pay a whole lot more anyway (you make $40K, pay $8K; make $40M, pay $8M). There are only two justifications for progressive taxation: the first, to give a break to those at the lower end of the scale, while still pulling in sufficient revenue. The second is the futile attempt to move towards greater income equality. The first is reasonable, the second ridiculous. Now, in a situation where the affluent continue to pay near the 40% rate, why should anyone begrudge them a share in the readjustment of rates, when it is arguable that they should not be paying a much higher rate at all.......
