Downward Spiral
By:Adam Martin
As we end the session, it looks like one of the biggest losses on the DJIA, giving up almost 234 points. The Nasdaq didn't fare quite as badly in afternoon trading thanks, in part, to Intel. Stocks fell at the bell on unemployment numbers that came in weaker than expected, signalling increasing weakness in the economy, and that news set the tone for the entire session as traders fear an erosion of consumer confidence will follow the rise in unemployment. Intel's announcement that Q3 numbers will meet forecasts seems to have mitigated losses on the Nasdaq, but did little to help the DJIA. News from corporate America continues to be grim, and traders are becoming more and more convinced that the economy is continuing to weaken. Some analysts predict that third quarter results will be the weakest yet, and that Q4 may not be much, if at all, better. Also of concern is continuing weakness in the global economy which could hinder any domestic growth. Manufacturing inventories, however, declined sharply as companies hold back production volume to match demand. Once those inventories are under control, production will ramp up again, and that is an important component of economic recovery.
