Barron's Excerpt 9/8/01:

Q: Any pans?

Price: I'm cautious about Research in Motion [maker of the BlackBerry] because I was at a panel a couple of weeks ago and a fellow from Coke was talking about his experience. He was using iPAQs from Compaq and Palms from Palm, and he was saying that iPAQ was the superior choice because it is very easy if you want to do e-mail, and it has a mini-operating system from Microsoft. You can open attachments, you can do e-mail much easier. You can look at an Excel spread sheet, and you can look at a word document as well.
With the BlackBerry, you have to put up with an inferior network. And then here comes the mainstream products from Microsoft. Here comes the mainstream adoption of data networking on the CDMA infrastructure. So why would you continue to buy BlackBerrys?

RIMM has a lot of cash, so it is not going to disappear as a company. But I think the company is in for some difficult periods.

Wick: It has $10 a share worth of cash on the balance sheet. So it is not as good a short as it was.
