Buckley often speaks highly of people on the Right. Don't be misled by Buchanan's bitterness......As I recall, Buckley did defend Kirk, while admitting that someone might question the passages. I could be mistake. I do know that he defended Sobran initially, by the way, saying that he could see how his manner of speaking might lead to suspicion, but that he didn't think he was an anti- semite. It was when Sobran responded to the controversy by escalating his intemperance that relations broke....On Buchanan, he temporized as much as possible, but eventually reluctantly concluded that there was something to the charges of (mild) anti- semitism, and insensitivity to issues (like the Holocaust) that demanded circumspection.....
