To All: My recollection of the problem is Japan is that it is related to REAL ESTATE not stocks. Real Estate values got pumped up to extravagant levels, then the bubble burst. Most real estate was financed. The result was the vast majority, if not all, of the banks in Japan were TECHNICALLY INSOLVENT. This VASTLY reduced their lending capacity which brought about a tremendous restriction in their money supply and resulted in the illiquidation of the stock market. If you all recall, years ago we had a S&L crisis and many were closed. Japan has not been able to bring itself to the recapitalization of the banking community and a "fresh start" thus the sickness malingers on. I see nothing like that in USA. JDN
