Gates buys stake in Extended Stay

WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- The investment fund of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates on Thursday reported taking a 5.34 percent stake in Extended Stay America, the Spartanburg S.C.-based hotel chain.

In documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Cascade Investment disclosed owning 4.95 million shares of Extended Stay's (ESA: news, chart, profile) outstanding common stock. The filing did not specify the prices or dates Cascade purchased the stock. Extended Stay currently owns and operates 410 hotels in 39 U.S. states. Shares of Extended Stay closed Thursday down 38 cents to $16.92.
