Yep -- in our grandparents day dancing was taken seriously, and every civilized child went to a dancing academy to learn. Did you ever read Penrod? That was apparently based on Tarkenton's childhood experiences. But I guess with no movie theaters (at least not that cultured people went to) or bowling alleys or McD's, and certainly no hanging out on the corner, dances were one of the few acceptable places (outside of church socials and school) to mingle with the opposite sex.

I went to dancing school for a bit, but all I remember about it was doing a tap dance in a white satin suit my mother had made. Don't know what happened to that suit. It would be a stitch to look at it today!

Do you ever come over to the Precious Memories thread? Sometime today I'll be posting an experience I had this morning which you might enjoy reading about. Can't give you a cite since I haven't written it yet, and won't before lunch.
