Read a post on Yahoo by someone calling themselves barefoot and redneck.

Post was an attempt, as best I can tell, I'll give it that.

Started with $47 million- $30 million of the company''s money and $17 million from employee contributions - the fund has been used to target businesses with high-growth market opportunities parallel to InfoSpace''s own wireless and broadband infrastructure interests, says Peter Christothoulou, vice president of corporate strategy and development at InfoSpace Ventures.

"The companies need to be focused in a market that is, one, big; and two, growing rapidly," Christothoulou says. "Management is always important, and a scaleable business model with a path to sustainable profits is key."

As a provider of Internet infrastructure services, InfoSpace''s bread and butter is powering private-label information and applications services across the Internet to wireless devices and Web sites. Accordingly, the company has chosen to invest in the likes of Airbiquity (formerly IDC), iSyndicate and OmniSky Corp.

Airbiquity integrates wireless voice and data solutions for mobile devices; iSyndicate provides content syndication services and applications; and OmniSky provides wireless services for handheld devices.

"We''re identifying large market spaces that overlap with our business," Christothoulou says. "We''re seeing companies ... that pose good partnership opportunities for us and are good investments, and hence, are an opportunity for us to achieve financial gain. We''re leveraging our resources."
