Re: If you believe AMD will receive a 25% performance boost from SOI

Well, we'll see. IBM seems to be doing pretty well with it, and Motorola increased the clock of their processor 100% from one month to the next when they went SOI - but it was also on a new core. Meanwhile, my favorite is when Intel claims that SOI stops being beneficial 2 generations from now (the .07 node) if an ultra low-k wafer material is being used. Well, since the main benefit of SOI for performance is that it provides an ultra low-k layer, Intel might as well say "if you've already got SOI, you don't need it."

AMD to speed up "Hammer" with IBM technology

Los Angeles (ph/daf) – Advanced Micro Systems (AMD) has licensed IBM’s Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) technology for its forthcoming 64-bit processor, "Hammer." It is said that SOI increases CPU performance by 30 percent at lower temperatures, without any additional changes in the chip design.

Under the terms of the multimillion dollar agreement, IBM will support AMD with chip design services over the next years.

Hammer marks AMD’s entry in the server market, until now dominated by competitor Intel. Analysts expect that Hammer could outperform Intel’s 64-bit Itanium when using SOI technology

Not just a license, but design support as well.
