WEST KINGSTON, R.I., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- American Power Conversion (APC) today announced the new Smart-UPS® 1000 and 1500 VA tower uninterruptible power supply (UPS) units. These new units feature eight outlets and offer full power management support through APC's award-winning PowerChute® software designed to integrate with the most widely used network operating systems. Connectivity for management is now available through USB or serial port connections. In addition, reliability is enhanced with two new features that prolong battery life. These features include a new temperature compensated battery charger that continually adjusts for optimum performance, and an extended range AVR (automatic voltage regulation) Boost and AVR Trim design that delivers computer grade power during the deepest brownouts or over voltage conditions without using battery power.

APC Smart-UPS 1000 and 1500 devices offer a management-customization slot, providing increased UPS management flexibility. By utilizing APC's extensive selection of accessories, which include environmental, Web-based, and out-of- band management capabilities, network managers can simply monitor, manage, and protect servers and related network equipment from costly downtime. Compatible with industry-recognized standards-based protocols, such as Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), Telnet and Web technology, users can easily manage their APC devices via Web browsers, in addition to industry-leading management platforms.
The Smart-UPS 1000 and 1500 tower models will ship with APC's PowerChute® UPS management software. This management package performs automatic unattended system shutdown as well as important management and diagnostic features. PowerChute also gives network administrators flexibility in configuring specific UPS reaction to power events. For each possible power event the user has the option of choosing up to seven items from a list of possible UPS actions, such as log event, notify users, and safely shutdown server.
APC's new PowerChute Business Edition 5-Node Version is available as a free download at apcc.com . It currently includes agents for Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000 (other operating systems to follow). The Windows NT/2000 based server and console can manage up to 5 agents simultaneously regardless of operating system.
PowerChute Business Edition 25-Node Version is available through APC's Factory store, as well as APC channel partners and resellers for an estimated resale price of $499. The 25-node version provides the convenience of managing up to 25 agents at once, taking advantage of the software's mass configuration, and centralized event handling features.

Intelligent Battery Management system
A high precision battery charge system with automatic true-load battery tests improves reliability. Redundant overcharge protection and continuous, non-pulsed charging with temperature compensation are additional battery life enhancements provided by the APC Intelligent Battery Management system. Batteries last longer and an audible warning is provided before the batteries wear out.
Hot-swappable, user-replaceable batteries maximize uptime
User-replaceable batteries can be swapped out easily and quickly without powering down the connected load. This saves time and the expense of returning the UPS to the factory for battery service.
Extended Input Voltage Range with AVR Boost and AVR Trim
This feature reserves battery capacity in the event of a prolonged power disturbance and increases battery life while keeping output voltage in a narrow range. The Smart-UPS 1000 and 1500, 230 volt units accept input voltages between 160 and 286 volts with regulation of 208-253V without transferring to battery. Maximum adjustable input range is 151-302 volts. This ensures that critical equipment receives regulated input voltage during brownouts and overvoltage conditions, thus increasing equipment availability. The Smart-UPS 1000 and 1500 120 volt units accept input voltages between 82 and 147 volts with regulation of 106-132 volts without transferring to battery. Maximum adjustable input range is 75-154 volts.

120-volt units immediately warn the user of wiring problems such as improper grounds that could cause shocks or prevent the UPS from adequately suppressing surges.
The Smart-UPS 1000 and 1500 tower models are available in both 120-volt and 230-volt versions, and will be shipping in North American and Latin America in October 2001 and in most other countries worldwide by the end of Q3 2001.
