This only strengthens my belief that Authorize.Net can grow by leaps and bound and possibly into a future giant. Several unknowable questions arise in attempting to estimate the economic import of this announcement. We can have some vague sense of what the upper limit of the potential for this deal is for Infospace because we know the maximum amount of customer it could bring Authorize.Net. Questions:

What is the transaction volume of these businesses and what percentage of it will be done over the internet.

And how long will it take to transition the businesses that are going to use Authorize.Net to it.

I'm going to hope for and expect more deals of this type between Authorize.Net and financial institutions, especially so because the regional and super regional banks and thrift are just now beginning to offer the customers internet based services. The potential for Authorize.Net in this particular market is enormous. Their are still over 8,000 banks in this country and possibly several hundred in Union Bank of California's asset range.

As long as we're on this subject of internet based payment transactions, I'll mention that I just recently noticed that my local Ace Hardware store now has a cash register that has its credit card transactions processed over the internet. The prior method had been to for the store clerk to establish a dial-up wireline connection for each credit card number verification. I don't know what company processes their credit card transactions, but Authorize.Net would obviously have the ability to do the job. Eventually most retail cash registers will process their credit card transactions over the internet, which will further Authorize.Net's potential market.
