Toyota Pirius - powered by NiMH battery and gasoline engine

Last weekend I saw my friend driving the above car. It is about the size of a Toyota Tercel. I was curious about this hybrid electrical vehicle since Stephan has been talking about using the phosphate battery to replace Nickel metal hydride (specifically mentioned in the last call.) Owner's manual: 11.9 gal gasoline tank, Ni metal hydride battery. 7.2V, 6.5 AH, 38, overall: 273.6V. He gets 500 mpg. The power scheme is interesting. Depending upon the driving conditions ( start and stop at light, cruising on high way, etc.) the power comes either source or both sources. The gasoline engine recharges the battery while driving. He bought it on the Internet from Toyota. No test driving!

Was Stephan thinking about this specific ev application and Toyota in the last call? Is there any discussion with Toyota and others? Stephan says that VLNC alone can not handle certain market segments. Is this one of the huge markets he talked about? Will the hybrid ev's become popular? Speculating. Ram
