There's no basic human function that will be compromised if people drive 55.

I have been away, but it doesn't impact on the question of what human function will be compromised if people drive 55, which will not be compromised at a slower speed--which obviously removes the point of your statement.

If the speed limit were set at 54, people should go that

WHY? All the time? Or only when they think it is a choice that assists the safety of their loved ones, and others with whom they share the planet??
