He sells several hundred million dollars worth of Microsoft shares per quarter, and has done so for years, to fund the continous expansion of his "wired world" concept. Also, some of his investments are done at the pre-IPO venture capital stage, so it's quite likely that he can realize gains on investments he has made in publicly owned companies even if their price is far below its IPO price and possibly even if the share price is less than a buck, depending at what venture capital stage he entered.
