Sudan: USA in peace initiative following discovery of new oil reserves
Text of report by Sudanese radio, in Arabic, on 6 September

France's envoy to the UN, Jean-David Levitte, has said that the UN Security Council might lift the sanctions imposed on Sudan since September 1996.

UN diplomats have said the sanctions could be lifted this month if Washington did not change its stance.

Levitte, whose country is currently chairing the UN Security Council, has proposed 17 September, as the date when the Security Council will meet to deliberate on the issue, pending approval by the USA. He went on to say that the approval by the USA would not necessarily amount to the final decision on the matter.

This has come after US officials issued statements to Los Angeles Times newspaper, saying that Washington would announce a diplomatic initiative aimed at mediating between the Sudanese government and the rebel [Sudan People Liberation] Movement.

In its yesterday's publication, the newspaper noted that the discovery of new and huge oil reserves could possibly contribute towards making the mediation a success.

The newspaper revealed that Bush administration intended to launch a large-scale aid programme amounting to 30m dollars for humanitarian relief work and development in Sudan.
