<<<"You have to realize the craftspeople talk about weeks to analyze one line for ISDN," said Mike Wodopian, vice president of communication markets at Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (Austin, Texas), "and they say it will be tougher for the DSLs-particularly asymmetric DSL>>>
GTE has found the exact opposite in their Redmond trials. Not only is installation easier, but the condition of the copper is far better than they expected. Remember the pizza story I told????
<<< Even committed optimists like Amati Communications' vice president of marketing Benjamin Berry said that DSL services are unlikely this year. "ADSL rollouts clearly will be coming next year at the earliest," Berry said. "We've learned a lot in trials, but the problems of copper plant are real ones.">>>
Tac is not a committed optimist. He's Amati's voice of reason. Their devil's advocate. Their Eyore, who, as I'm sure you remember, said on his special day, "Birthdays. . . here today, gone tomorrow. . ."
<<<Anyone who expected a consolidation of line codes in the name of standards may be surprised to learn that ANSI has not only created an ad hoc group for CAP ADSL standards, but later added QAM to the team's duties. In fact, mutually incompatible line codes may serve the needs of some small carriers seeking a differentiated DSL service.>>>
Actually, the AD Hoc committee was formed when the request for CAP to be a second line code was turned down. The best they can do now is place the crown on their own head. For all intents and purposes the standards issue is dead.
<<<"Lies are being told about modem performance," Jacobsen said. "In a noisy environment, a DMT ADSL modem degrades gracefully. A CAP modem, as the signal-to-noise ratio drops below a certain level, gives you catastrophic failure, particularly in an expanded RADSL spectrum.">>>
Way to go, Krista! She should know. She's seen them tested.
That's a long article and I would expect different people to analyze different portions. I've just noted a few segments that stood out.
