Random thoughts. It's difficult to see how this would benefit the organization that bombed the towers and the pentagon. Will it change our policy in any way that benefits them or will it change our policy in way that costs them? The answer is too obvious.

There was a feeling in this country that Israel had gone too far in Palestine and I think some of the feeling of support for Israel was eroding. Now there will be huge amount of feeling against radical Arabs and a new intellectual and emotional understanding of what drives the Jews to develop and maintain a policy of retaliation and militarism towards the Palestinians. It surely won't help anyone's cause to see Palestinians celebrating the deaths of thousands of mothers and fathers in NY.

Will Bush pass this next test better than he has others. It appears that right now he is allowing the secret service to scramble to protect his safety. Reportedly he has been flying in air force one at a high ceiling with fighter jets for protection. It may be the safe thing to do but it certainly sends a dangerous message to terrorists who want to see the effects of their actions strike fear into Bush and also sends an alarmist message to the public. I would have preferred to see him take a public stance and assume the small risk of attack.

What a bad break for those in the planes and on the ground that were injured and killed and for their families. I imagine that there will be a lot of job openings in jobs at high profile buildings in the future. There are other jobs where the building may not be leveled. What's done is done and but they have my sympathy.

As far as the market goes, I don't anticipate any long term effects. I imagine that there will be a lot more recources devoted to anti-terrorism and security. There may be a retaliation that creates tension in the ME and oil shares will move up and down. I don't think the ME will go to the wall on any retaliation since they are already condemning the attack and they clearly have relationship with us that they cannot afford to risk.

Unfortunately this illustrates the dangers in a highly technical society where the means of travel and destruction are so easily available to so many, including those with radical, suicidal views who welcome martyrdom. There is no sure protection from such people and the chemical, explosive, biological and other weapons they can command. I suppose the only safe alternative for individuals is to move away from targets. A determined, elusive, intelligent enemy with no regard for his own life is certainly a formidable threat. This is especially true when the only effective counter is probably a scorched earth policy which attacks the civilian populations which foster and nurture such terrorists and where that scorched earth policy is politically and morally proscribed.

Not a good earth today. Ed
