NYSE Not Decided on Resumption of Trade
NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York Stock Exchange said on Tuesday afternoon it had not yet reached a decision on resuming trade after U.S. stock markets were shut down due to the devastating air attacks on New York's twin towers in Manhattan's financial district and the Pentagon outside of Washington, D.C.

An NYSE spokesman said he could not yet comment on whether or not trade would resume on Wednesday. Nasdaq representatives were not immediately available to comment.

Three hijacked planes slammed into U.S. landmarks, destroying New York's World Trade Center and plunging the Pentagon outside Washington into flames. Financial markets shut in the United States as the globe remained fixated on television and wire reports for clues as to the extent and source of the attack.

Earlier, U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Harvey Pitt said that the U.S. securities markets have decided not to open for trading after several aircraft crashed into buildings in New York and Washington.

Pitt said in a statement that trading will resume ``as soon as it is practicable to do so.''

The last time the NYSE was closed during a regular trading day was April 27, 1994 for former President Richard Nixon's funeral
