Are customers really asking for a "Pentium"? I'm not convinced. Many people walk into a computer store and ask for a "PC", but that doesn't mean they're going to buy it from IBM. Many potential customers for a "LaserJet" have bought compatibles from vendors other than HP.

I think Cyrix and AMD have simply failed to produce a compelling package. Until recently, Cyrix tried to charge a premium for a chip with 10% better integer performance and poorer floating point performance. I should expect a discount for buying such a system.

I invest in AMD and Cyrix because it's impossible to improve the Pentium Pro design. Intel has hit a wall. If they try to optimize the chip, it loses performance or increases the die size. This presents a golden opportunity for Cyrix and AMD.

Until Intel can bring about the transition to the P7, there is a window of opportunity when the Pentium Pro and it's imitators will be a commodity product. The longer the window lasts, the more we make with AMD and Cyrix.
