Markets Closed Tomorrow:
NYSE, Nasdaq, Amex to Close Wednesday
Sep 11 4:31pm ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York Stock Exchange said on Tuesday that the main U.S. stock exchanges will not resume trade Wednesday, one day after U.S. financial markets were shut due to mass destruction in lower Manhattan from air attacks that leveled the World Trade Center's twin towers.

"The American Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq Stock Market and the New York Stock Exchange, after consultation with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and in light of the heinous attack on America, have decided to remain closed through Wednesday, September 12," the New York Stock Exchange said in a prepared statement.

"The U.S. markets, after further consultation with the SEC, will announce tomorrow when U.S. equities markets will reopen," the statement concluded.

Earlier on Tuesday, SEC Chairman Harvey Pitt said that the U.S. securities markets had decided not to open for trading Tuesday after three planes were crashed into buildings in New York and Washington.

The three hijacked planes slammed into U.S. landmarks, destroying New York's World Trade Center and plunging part of the Pentagon outside Washington into flames. Financial markets closed in the United States as investors remained fixated on television and wire reports for clues as to the extent and source of the attack.

Pitt said in a statement that trading would resume "as soon as it is practicable to do so."
