JQP Re: <<What could all those murdered people have done to deserve to die? It was truly senseless violence.>>

True words that illustrate how fueds and wars almost always start. One side feels that the insult or assault was so aggregious that the normal rules of law and behavior can be justifiably suspended. The resultant retaliation creates escalation which results in more violence and the cycle begins. These things are easier to start than to stop.

The forces we set in motion over the next few months may well establish the rules that determine the level of violence in the world over the next decades. If we over react and abuse our tremendous power, we will create more fear and militarism among not only terrorists but also those nations of the world that want to trust our restraint, adherence to the rule of law and benevolence.

Ghandi tried to break the cycle and was successful for a time. Martin Luther King tried to break the cycle. It takes a great and strong man and a great and strong nation to see beyond the cycle of unrestrained revenge and to recognize the rule of law. Unfortunately I'm not one of them and if my family was in one of those buildings I would be wanting to destroy not only those that did it but also those that I felt were capable of doing it. I hope that our country is run by those who are better than that and that we are careful to keep the rules to those of civilized peoples. If we choose to act as though the ends justify the means, we will have to live with that ourselves. There is a higher road and it can still result in the punishment of those who do such things but it must be fair and according to international law.

I think we should act with certainty and strength but if, and only if, we have the evidence to show the world that any extreme actions we take are fully justified and are according to international rules of law. Ed
