mkts to remain closed Wed ..Stock Markets to Remain Closed Wednesday
NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stock markets will remain shut for a second day on Wednesday after a terror attack that leveled the World Trade Center on Tuesday, the New York Stock Exchange (news - web sites) said.

``The American Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq Stock Market and the New York Stock Exchange, after consultation with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (news - web sites) and in light of the heinous attack on America, have decided to remain closed through Wednesday, September 12,'' the New York Stock Exchange said in a statement.

It said the U.S. markets, after further consultation with the SEC, will announce on Wednesday when U.S. equities markets will reopen.

Earlier on Tuesday, SEC Chairman Harvey Pitt said that the U.S. securities markets had decided not to open for trading Tuesday after three hijacked planes were crashed into buildings in New York and Washington.

The planes slammed into U.S. landmarks, destroying New York's World Trade Center and plunging part of the Pentagon (news - web sites) outside Washington into flames. Financial markets closed in the United States as downtown New York's financial district was evacuated and investors were focused on television and other news reports for clues as to the extent and source of the attack.

Pitt said trading would resume ``as soon as it is practicable to do so.''

The last time the New York Stock Exchange was closed for two straight days was to celebrate the end of World War II, according to the NYSE's Web site. The dates were August 15-16, 1945, a Wednesday and Thursday.
