I have been told by pilot friends that some of the better flight simulator PC games are amazingly accurate as far as flying a plane -- though not landing and taking off. And a simple handheld GPS receiver can be used to pinpoint position without consulting any of the instruments in the cockpit. The Microsoft flight simulator has spectacular and very accurate simulations of flying over New York and Washington DC, among other places. You really don't need years of training as a pilot to do what these scum did.
