All in all, today was a sad day. Truth be told, every day is a sad day for someone. If Bill was up there at work today, I hope that Bill had a chance to get his house in order. Is it a blessing or not to understand you will shortly die, or is better to die suddenly? We all go one way or the other, I suppose. I did not know Bill, except to talk to him on SI. I feel sad for you and your good friend.
