Although I've heard there's a denial, there's even a possibility that Flight 93, the one that crashed in Pennsylvania, was shot down. I don't have the time it went off course and took down its transponder like the other three, but it had been traveling some distance before it dropped.

Following the two crashes into the WTC, the White House was evacuated at 9:45 a.m. due to threats on its security. (Had Flight 93 made its turn by then? Anyone?). Just before the crash at 10:10 a.m. a passenger on a cell phone reported the hijacking, then reported an explosion and saw white smoke trailing the plane. It hit the ground at a 45 degree angle.

I live in DC and I wouldn't second-guess that decision under the circumstances. They may have felt it was headed for the White House or the Capitol.
