Tuesday September 11, 8:45 pm Eastern Time Kyocera Wireless unveils 3G phones for U.S.
SAN DIEGO, Sept 11 (Reuters) - Kyocera Wireless Corp., the U.S. cellular phone arm of Japanese industrial giant Kyocera (NYSE:KYO - news), introduced on Tuesday its line of phones for new third-generation (3G) networks for the United States.
The two new phones operate on the CDMA 2000 1X system, an advanced generation of Qualcomm Inc. (NasdaqNM:QCOM - news) Code Division Multiple Access standard.
Kyocera said in a release that the new phones could support data transfer rates of up to 153 kilobits per second, almost three times the speed of standard dial-up landline modems and more than 10 times the speed of current cell phone systems.
Third generation mobile networks will allow cell phones and other handheld devices to access the Internet.
``Our new 2200 series of phones allows carriers to increase capacity on, and thus the revenues from, their existing networks,'' said Stanley Scheufler, corporate vice president for marketing at Kyocera Wireless, in a statement.
The company said the phones will arrive in the U.S. during the fourth quarter, with pricing to be determined by carriers.
Both phones will operate on the 1900 MHz CDMA PCS network, the 800 MHz CDMA cellular networks, and analog networks, meaning that they would be usable on both Sprint PCS Group's (NYSE:PCS - news) and Verizon Wireless's networks.
