It took an attack by Japan on the territorial US before we reacted. Nearly all of Europe fell to the Axis powers waiting for America's entry into the war. And that's pretty typical of the US.....it takes forever to get consensus, especially when it comes to wielding power, no matter what our reputation.
I hope we will see some the consensus emerging. It seems that everybody (of the talking heads on TV) right now is just too shellshocked to formulate any kind of longer term strategy.
Nonetheless, I think we have consensus now and we will track down the responsible parties. However, I don't think using force will do the trick....I think these guys are very smart and committed, and we will have to go underground and catch them that way.
I think there are so many people that have blood on their hands. How about the political and religious leaders turning the youngsters into fanatics, how about the mothers turning their sons into nutcases. How about the countries supplying money shelter and other resources to fight "zionism" as they say?
If it turns out to be the bin Laden guy, he is just on the top of the terrorist food chain, but there are tens of thousands that are ready enlist with him, or any successor if we capture him, and provide the ultimate punishment our pitiful justice system can wield - 3 warm meals per day, a bed, room etc. I understand that bin Laden has some medical problems, something with kindneys, and you can bet that if he is captured, it will be you and I picking up the tab for his kidney dialisis (sp?) equipment.
