Maybe it might be a good idea to have the cockpit of a plane sealed off from the passenger area, with the control crew, (pilot, navigator, co-pilot)boarding the plane through their own separate entrance.

While that may be hindsight and sadly nothing can be done to change what has happened, it doesn't mean that things cannot be altered to prevent a future occurrence.

Is there any reason that passengers should have access to the cockpit?

Blaming the intelligence community serves what purpose?
What could they have done?
I doubt if they would have had the ability to know who, when, what, where something like this was going to happen, no matter how many agents they had on the job.
