Do you know why the serpent symbolizes evil? Most folk have a natural aversion to snakes. It's one of many persistent evolved human 'instincts'. We possess this aversion because it increases our chances of survival thru the avoidance of poisoning. Of course, it's not quite as useful today as it was in the time of early man.
Suppose for a moment, early man had no concept of a supreme being. That would be the most likely starting point, of course, since we don't observe lower animals in worship. Now suppose there was one group out of many which evolved a natural tendency (biologically based) to believe in a supreme being (there would likely come to be a meme component as well). It doesn't take a genius to see how an early tribe of man, who had come to embrace a religion, would have a considerable societal and military edge over other tribes which had no such tendency; thus leading to the perpetuation of the genes that code for it. Indeed, a strong religion could even induce those tribes to be warlike, so that they could ruthlessly expand their territory and increase their numbers at will. And the conscience which developed to keep the group from slaughtering each other, would be appeased when it came to killing an outsider; for in the case of the latter, the victim was an infidel who did not bow to the one true God.
