Why are we debating about 'a Star Wars missle defense' when our existing airport security system is SO INADDEQUATE?

Good question. One answer is that we always prepare for the last war. Another answer is that, until yesterday, it was easier to imagine the threat. Another answer is that missile defense will further the careers and profits of powerful constituents in the military and industry. Finally, it is easier to perceive a threat if we can imagine a solution that doesn't require us to make any fundamental change in the way we behave.
