It was a strange drive into work today.

I started off with a stop to get some coffee at the Sunoco Minimart.
People sort of walking around like zombies filing in line to pick up a copy of today's paper.
The radio turned up loud so everyone could listen to the news.
The warm hello from the girl at the counter was replaced with a hurried, "$4.75" as she worked at a fast pace to keep the breakfast orders coming with a feeling of importance as if she was doing her part in the rescue effort.

Back in the car.
Heading towards the city.
People staring out the windsheild but I'm not certain they were really paying attention to the road infront of them.
Their hearing was the dominating sense. You could see reactions on their face as different news stories were told.
I could tell I was listening to the same news station as most of the drivers.

Absent was the bumper hugging agressive driver.

Everyone just maintained their speed giving plenty of room between them and the car in front.

45 minutes into my commute the traffic completely stops.
I hear on the radio that the parkways were closed at all the city boarders including Queens, and the Bronx.
No cars allowed in so that these people would not try to enter Manhattan via these burroughs.
I managed to get off an exit and make my way south through side streets and a few different avenues that I knew might get me closer.
Eventually I found a familiar looking area and made it to the Bronx.
Tried to get a copy of the NY Times at the 7Eleven store.
"All sold out", the foreign counter clerk said with a feeling of nervousness without making any eye contact.

Many of the other stores were closed with steel roll down gates secured.

I now must begin working on a job when I would rather just sit here with my radio.
No one else was able to get into work today.
Long Island is more or less closed for anyone trying to drive in due to the check points at the border.
It's better off.
I'm worried about my father.
He had a difficult day yesterday. It was very stressfull being that close to the disaster.
From the roof top he watched the towers burn.
He looked to the left and could see the Empire State Building. It was perhaps 3 blocks away.
Right there where you could probably throw a rock and hit it.
That's when it occurred to him that it may be the next target.
Then he saw a few F-16s fly by.
The sense of urgency almost became panic as he and my brother made their way down the building.
He left his car there and gave orders for our men down near the WTC to leave their work van and try to get home via the subways/Long Island Railroad.
After hours of sitting in panic striken traffic jams he finally made it out of Manhattan.

This morning I got a call telling me that my youngest brother who just bought a house a few weeks ago, has a neighbor who worked at the WTC.
My brother noticed several cars gathering outside the house. He thought perhaps there was some sort of party perhaps, hoping that it had nothing to do with the towers.
He found out that his neighbor worked somewhere around the 100th floor.
This was above the area where the planes hit.
Trapped.
His wife never received word from him.

Now it hits home more so than ever.

This hurts.
