I don't like the idea of massive civilian casualties either. I have been to Dresden, and what happened there must have been unimaginably awful. War is unimaginably awful.

Dresden is not the best example because it was probably, in retrospect, unnecessary to the victory. But where the people are being used as shields, and the destruction being caused by the perpetrators is this horrific, then what choice do you have? The choice may be, allow this to continue to flourish, or accept reluctantly the fact that more innocent people will die in the short run to hopefully prevent this from happening again in the longer run.

The Taliban may not be so brave when the skies open up night after night, day after day.
