Your prose fits right in with that superior paper. There are a lot of people calling for war today. My list might be informative to them, since wars-especially long ones like they seem to want, have costs. Not the least cost is that of occupation. America has become very adept at winning wars, while proving to be the worst occupiers in human history. Occupation goes entirely against our grain. And those countries that so many want to occupy would not be subdued like post-war Germany. They would continue their war for as many decades as it took to get us out.

And no, I DO NOT THINK THAT Tom Daschle cares a wit about yesterday's casualties except to the extent that they give him either advantage or disadvantage relative to George Bush, who is his all-encompassing obsession. Some of his fans on the American left may be distracted for a few days, but they, too, will come around to his attitude...
