The serpent does not symbolize evil. The serpent symbolizes those who spread the idea that we can tell the difference between good and evil, primarily the advocates of common religions. Religions need not corrupt us with the concept of good and evil, but it helps mobilize the populace to accept or even engage in activities such as the Crusades, the Inquisition, the Salem witch trials, and the destruction of the World Trade Center.
