>Extremists philosophy is at the root of the evil we witnessed yesterday
Lack of education and limited economic options to pursue a life with dignity are the roots.
>Intolerance of others beliefs is unAmerican but you must draw the line when the teachings of a group include the justification of terrorism.
I agree. I must remind you that teachings of other groups justify terrorism in many forms (killing abortion doctors, Christians massacring people in order to save them over the ages, Jewish fundamentalist in the settlements believing their own God gave them their land and all Arabs should be exterminated, on and on and on).
>Not to mention their medieval enslavement of their women.
Well if you knew more about Islam and you had some Muslim friends you wouldn't say crap like that which is fed to you through the media. Yes, the fanatics who distort Islam have made this an issue which the media (forever on guard to perpetrate the Arab image) is feeding to you and the masses just like they are feeding you crap like Survivor, Rambo, etc.
>Muslim fundamentalism must end
ALL fundamentalism must end. You do it by a relentless focus and money thrown at education, cultural exchanges, and economic development in these places where fundamentalism is growing. If they had good jobs and lived with a certain sense of dignity you automatically make an incredible dent on the endless supply of suicide bombers.
>Muslim fundamentalism is too dangerous to ignore.
All fundamentalism is too dangerous to ignore IMHO. So, throwing our weight again around the world by showing them all that we are tough will not solve the problem. What is the problem? Our sense of security and peace was shattered yesterday. We need leaders who have the balls, think outside the box, LEAD, and solve the fundamental root causes of this problem, which is the US foreign policy in the Middle East. All emotional talk of bombing the bastards is venting and will have a negative effect.
Powell spoke today. Notice he said it will be a great effort on all fronts" intelligence, security, military AND DIPLOMATIC". Whether we like it or not, we all heard the message yesterday. We are not safe, who is to say that at this minute right now there is no another bunch of these guys heading to hit another target?". To make sure this does not happen again, I believe, making a very strong effort on the DIPLOMATIC front will go A LOT further in making sure that this does not happen again instead of doing a very strong MILITARY effort. Our government has a duty to protect us and I hope they listen and address the root causes of these senseless acts, our complete failure of our foreign policy which drives people to desperation and the courage to take their own lives. As long as they were isolated incidents, mostly not in the US, this was ok. Yesterday it hit home and it is vastly different. |
