Closing our borders might be a short term solution. I believe that our intelligence community does a fairly good job of protecting the US. We don't hear about their successes, only failures.

I think the heightened security measures taken thusfar have been completely appropriate, just so long as the long-term ability of Americans to move around isn't permanently curtailed. I am very anxious to see the post-mortem on what gaps in the net allowed this to happen. These fanatics were clearly the elite and the operation took years of planning. I'm sure there are reasonable ways to defend against such attacks, but the courses of action will not be evident until the nation has calmed down, dealt with the grief, and responded appropriately.

Personally, I think we are rather quick to say that Bin Laden is responsible. Just b/c Bin Laden is a terrorist does not necessarily mean that he ordered this attack. Perhaps a more extreme faction of his group?

It may be... but they needed at least four qualified pilots familiar with Boeing aircraft. They picked transcontinental flights loaded with fuel. These guys were smart, savvy, well-training, and well funded. That shortens the short-list dramatically. I don't think I buy a "faction" of the group simply because the operation was too big. Even if it was a "faction" of his group, then Bin Laden would be responsible as he would be at the top of their chain of command.
