Are you threatened by competition from CYRIX AMD? Andy Groove answers abolutely...and more...

Compared with software companies, you have such a capital-intensive business. Perhaps your risk is seen as higher?

The world is filled with the cadavers of dead software companies--far more than the cadavers of dead semiconductor companies. Software companies can disappear almost overnight. Semiconductor companies undulate and fluctuate, but they don't go away. But I can't even think of Intel as a semiconductor company anymore.

How would you describe your business?

We build the guts of modern computing, period. We'll go away when modern computing goes away. Or we'll go away if computing takes a left turn and goes back to [dumb terminals]. But that's not an overnight phenomenon.

We haven't touched on the competition. Do you see AMD and Cyrix as a threat?

Absolutely.

Then why did you let them have MMX [an Intel technology that enables chips to handle graphics and video better]?

Because we wanted to standardize it. You want to figure out what we worry about? Every single time it's going to be growth, the growth of the industry. MMX, networked multimedia, was the next thing this industry needed.

So standardization overrode whatever fears you had about competition?

Yeah. But by the way, it wasn't an obvious decision. We sat around the conference tables and murdered each other over that issue for some time.

Some people say you gave away the technology to keep alive the competition.

We're not that complicated! We compete to win. We don't compete to push them to some minimum and then back off. '
