05/29/97 - Daimler-Benz Fuel Cell Car `Ahead of Schedule'

Stuttgart, Germany - Daimler Benz AG Chairman Jergen Schrempp says the
company's fuel-cell powered passenger car project is well ahead of schedule for its October debut at the Tokyo Motor Show, reports Reuters. To an audience of shareholders at the company's annual meeting this week, Schrempp also said, "within a short time we have made a quantum jump and in two years the first all-wheel-drive fuel
cell car in the world will be ready to roll." The car that will be shown in October will be one of the automaker's tiny new A-Class cars. In May of last year, Daimler-Benz showed a fuel cell-powered passenger van (News Notes 5/14/96); then in October Toyota Motor Corp. showed its fuel cell-powered RAV-4 mini sport-utility vehicle (News Notes 10/4 and 10/14/96). Daimler-Benz recently partnered with Canada's Ballard Power Systems to develop and manufacture fuel cells (News Notes 4/15/97).
