Why did the towers fall? One answer may be that asbestos-containing thermal insulation was not sprayed on the steel supporting structure, allowing the fire to weaken the steel (fire temperatures are well above the melting point of steel), thus allowing it to collapse. My memory says that the WTC was built in the mid-'70s when we in the U.S. began phasing asbestos out of many of its uses, including thermal insulation and especially spraying such because overspray will drift, in this case, all over lower Manhattan. Insulating sprays are still used, of course, but the chances are that none is close to being as effective as asbestos. ---Jack---
